HELP! Any way to bypass a startup capacity on a Carrier heat pump? I think mine went bad but I'm not sure. Sure would be nice to just temporarily run this thing til I get a new one. Is this part necessary? Can I do some testing without it? Thanks!
Anyone know the amperage for a 3 ton carrier heat pump condenser? Im installing a new system in my house and i dont have the unit yet, but i want to make sure the amperage on my breaker is correct. Carrier Heat Pump unit making a clackout noise outside and a whistle inside? Recently my carrier heat pump has been making a strange "clacking" noise at the outside unit. I did notice that my drain line at the coils inside was a bit clogged so I cleared it. I am not sure if it's popping up again right now. It's also making a very slight whistling/whining noise at the inside unit that it hasn't made before. That is continuous whenever the unit is on. The clacking noise is intermittent and appears to be the worst when the unit is shutting off or even after it is off it will clack for a minute or so. Has anyone else run into this? Is this a sign of some maintenance I need to do? I've had this thing checked out before and it's less than five years old but it is an el cheapo carrier heat pump installed by the home builder. Thanks! Forgot to add that i checked temp at vents and is OK at 15 degree drop. I clean the filter and the outside unit regularly.

What might cause a 5 year old Carrier heat pump to buzz after being in Air Condition mode? I have a 5 year old Carrier Weather Maker (Puron) heat pump. It has worked find in both heat and air mode, but last summer it began buzzing. We had a tech out who charged us a good amount of money to switch thermostats. The buzzing stopped until this spring when we turn the AC on. Now it buzzes again. The buzzing is from the outside unit. The intensity varies sometimes so loud it keeps us awake. I can flip the outside switch off, buzz continues. I can only stop it by turning of the main breaker. It only continues after the breaker is back on, and AC runs. Switching AC to heat do not seem to work.
How would I get a price on a Carrier Heat Pump and Gas furnace without going to a dealer? I was interested in a rough price for a Carrier Heat pump and Gas Furnace combo, but didn't want to go thru the hassle of dealing with a dealers sales pitch. Has anyone head one installed recently, and what type/model. Thanks! Hi, Didn't mean to start a 'war'... I currently have a gas furnace (about 5 years old) and AC Condenser outside (both Lennox), and I have ducting in place for forced air and returns. My place is about 2000 sq ft and was really just trying to get a 'rough' price for how much these systems cost (the Carrier Heat Pump, etc), since there is no way of finding on-line list prices on these. You are all correct so far that I am not an HVAC pro (I am actually a Video Engineer), so I do not have intimate knowledge of the industry. Just figured I would get a rough price (are we talking $5k, $10k, $20k) before I waste a HVAC professionals time. I will answer any other details if it helps me get a rough price.
what is a single stage heat pump? vs a multi stage heat pump? i am trying to put in a new programable thermostat and i dont know which i have. it is a carrier heat pump that was put into the house in 1997.
Why would I only have one ZONE heating and AC? Carrier INFINITY Heat pump system was installed.? THIS IS A NEW HOUSE ABOUT 3500 SQ FEET AND IS TWO STORIES. DOES NOT HAVE AN OPEN FOYER. THE HOUSE IS LOCATED IN NORTHEAST PA. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!!!
I am buying a new furnace with heat pump for our older home. Would you buy a Lennox, Carrier, or Maytag? Folks say the Maytag has a better warranty but Lennox and Carrier have excellent rebate programs going. The furnace will have 95% efficiency with a variable speed blower and 2-3 stages. I am also getting a heat pump installed. So which one is the better furnace, the Lennox, Carrier, or Maytag?
Carrier Heat Pump just buzzing outside? OK, here is the rundown. Everything was fine until tonight. System started blowing warm air. Come to find out there was a lizard shorting across the contacts on the startup capacitor! At any rate, everything inside working OK (air handler, t-stat) but outside just buzzing. No fan, no compressor, and a bad buzzing noise. Someone else said bad motor or compressor - but isn't it more likely the capacitor given these circumstances? Also if the compressor blows wouldn't the outside fan keep running? Thanks! my contactors are fine. i checked all that already.
How would I get retail pricing for heat pump units and accessories like Carrier, Lennox, York, etc? Trying to find out how I can get a list price on HVAC equipment on the internet.
Heat Pump Carrier will not cool in the daytime R22 system? No ice or dirt on coil, blower runs, good suction at return air register, filter is clean. No condensate in the afternoon, good condensate in the morning. Outside temp 75F at night and 105 in the afternoon. No changes to home no rooms added, unit is 8 years old and has been working well. 3.5 ton unit in 1800 sq foot home. Morning pressures are 95 low side and 175 high side. Afternoon pressures are 115 low side and 250 high side. Using R22 guages No hissing sound at compressor however it is making rattling sounds like rocks in a coffee can. Two hot lines and two cold lines at reversing valve. Cycled from cool to heat and back once (wife almost killed me and afraid to do it again) want to try hooking my gauges from the low side to the true suction but do not know where the true suction is. low side pressure is off the temperature charts which end at about 86psi. Have not checked amp draw however unit is not tripping breaker. leaning toward air in system, worn out compressor or leaking/stuck switching valve. THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLYS SO FAR, THEY HELPED ME KNOW WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK!
I need to buy a compressor for a carrier 3.5 ton heat pump that is about 8 years oldve? are there good and bad manufactures of compressors? about how much should a compressor cost to install parts and labor in san antonio texas
Fuses keep blowing on our heat pump unit.? We have a Carrier heat pump and the heat is not working. The fuse is blown out in the unit in the attic. Every time we have tried to replace it, it blows as soon as the heat is turned back on. Any clue as to what this is and what we can do before calling a repairman?
Carrier A/C- heat pump not working? Installed 7-8 years ago. The unit will blow air, but the air isn't warm. It hasn't been much of a problem since I live in Phoenix and didn't have to have heat, but summer is coming and I'll need the A/C. Repairman told me it needed to be flushed and the freon replaced. Said it would cost about $600. I want to get another estimate, but thought I'd ask here if the first estimate sounded like hogwash. I used this repair place before about 2 years ago - at the time, he said the unit had frozen up and it cost me about $250. Any suggestions? I'm frustrated since the unit isn't that old.
heat pump will not heat??? i have a carrier heat pump...........the fan runs but the unit will not heat could it be the heat strips in the indoor unit?? or what else should i check for??
What is the average cost to have a completely new all electric HVAC unit installed? Heat pump and Furnace.? My home heating and cooling system is nearing the end of it's usefulness. I currently have a 1984 model Carrier all electric Heating and Air Conditioning unit (heat pump and furnace) that needs to be replaced soon....maybe real soon! I would like to hear from some of you who have had to replace their entire system. What should I expect to pay for a new unit including the cost for installation. I know I can get contractors to come by and give me free estimates but I'd like to get some idea of the total cost before I call them. Thanks I currently have a 2.5 ton unit and will replace it with a similar system. I may go to a 3 ton unit.
model # 38QN030330SM? our carrier heat pump outside unit went out and we are looking for a diagram for this model unit # 38QN030330SM and this is the Inside unit model # 40AQ030300BU
Evaporator Coil Replacement? I have a 3 ton, 10 SEER 15 year old Carrier Model#:FB4ANF036 heat pump. I was told that the evaporator coil had a leak and could not be repaired or replaced due to an industry shift toward 12 SEER and higher units and was recommended to replace the entire heat pump system. Does this seem to be sound advice or is there a possibility of coil replacement?
A/C fan unit not working? I have an old Carrier heat pump thermostat model LR69071. For some reason the a/c fan outside is not working. The inside fan turns on but nothing on the outside. When i swich it to cool, I hear a clicking sound outside but the fan doesn't run. Right now the thermostat wiring is as follows: C-blue Y-yellow G-green O-orange W2 white R-red and E-brown goes to W2 as well. First of all is this wiring correct? I have reset the circuit breaker and that doesn't seem to help. It's starting to get really hot and I wanted to see if I could do it myself before calling a tech. Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!
How does a variable speed air handler work as comparied to a single speed? This is with a four ton Carrier heat pump unit. I think the fan is set as a single speed. How can I tell?
Outside heat pump covered in frost? My outside heating unit (Carrier) is covered in about an inch of frost. It has been for a few days and doesn't seem to be defrosting on its own. No one else's in the neighborhood is frosting up like that, so we called someone to come look at it. Until then, we put it on auxiliary heat so that it isn't running. I'm worried that it's going to be an expensive fix. The unit is 3 years old, so I'm hoping that maybe whatever is wrong will be covered under warranty. Any ideas?
Does heat pump compressor fan run in winter? I have a Carrier heat pump that serves as an A/C and Heater. While I have experienced no problem with heating (now in winter) or cooling (in summer), I occassionally hear my outside heat pump..(a hum sound which goes away after some time). I do not see the fan running. I feel the air through the vent which must be from the air handler. Should the heat pump fan run when if I program my thermostat to run the "Fan"? Thank you!!
I cannot figure out why my Carrier ptac system will not run the fan on auto. It runs on fan in heat&cool modes I have replaced the fan relay, reversing valve relay, heating relay, run capacitor and thermostat and still the fan operates in fan mode only.the fan will not turn on on auto.the compressor turns on but not the fan in both cooling and heat.the heat pump has aux. heat strip. Please help..... Thanx, jrod2567
Which is a better air conditioner? Carrier or Trane? I'm adding a 3 ton total electric heat-pump system to my home. Between the 2 brands, if cost is not an issue which is the better? Either one I will be buying a 10 year parts and labor warranty. So which would you recommend as far as performance, reliability, and cost to run? Also, as a consumer, which would you prefer if you were buying a home as we plan to sell the house in a few years and want this to add value to the home.
A/c replacement question? I have a condo and the 20 year old original Carrier heat pump unit gave up and i am having different contractors come and give me estimates on replacement. all contractors told me while I am replacing the outside heat pump unit, i should also replace the inside Air Handler unit in the attic because they wont be compatible otherwise and the outside unit might give up in 2 years if i hook these incompatible systems up (difference in efficiencies etc I had one contractor come to me today who said that i dont need to replace the inside air handler unit. When i mentioned what others said, he says that a T valve (or some valve, i didnt catch the exact name of the valve) will solve that issue. he says all i need to do is replace the outside heat pump unit. Is this contractor right ? this comp. has been in business for 50+ years (so not a fly by night, meaning just trying to make a sale leaving me screwed). If i really dont need to replace the inside unit i save 1500$. what to do? i read in 2 places if systems are mismatched (which it would be because heat pump will be 2007 and air handler would be 1994 ie 13 seer vs 10 seer) that it voids the warranty of the new unit. my concern is NOT efficiency (my bill is low enough). My main concern is life of the new unit. I dont want to jeopardize that. sure i would love to save 1500$ but at what cost ? for what its worth, i know nothing about these so have to rely on common consensus of all contractors (hence getting 10 bids :)
What is the "good, better, best" brands of Heating & Air components and wich to stay away from? I've Heard of Trane, Carrier, Heil. but wich is best or does it really matter with the brand on a furnace and a/c unit. I'm getting a lot of quotes that range from $5500 up to $18,000 for a 3 1/2 ton a/c & 100,000 btu gas furnace My home is right at 2,000 sq. ft. and has 14 vents of wich 3 are ran in the attic b/c that part of the house is a addition. One guy wants to tear out all the attic vents and put in new ones and double them from 3 to 6. Some are Hybrid heat pump and they are more expensive but not by more than $800 over the standard but I havn't had to shop for this type of item before and I don't know much about it and of course every sales guy that comes out with a different brand claims their's is the best.
Ducted AC air condition not cooling? Hi People, I have been struggling ith the A/C the last few weeks. We have an old carrier Heat pump Serial number 80029 Model number 38RQ033900. I measured the temperature at the inlet filter which read 30.9 C and measured the temp at the closest outlet at the ceiling and it measured 30.4. The out side temperature is 42, should i expect the outlet temperature to be at least 8 degrees cooler than the inlet temp. Thanks Thanks for your advise. Today I went into the roof to take a look at the evapourator and I saw that some of the insulation has fallen from the ducting away exposing the thin pipe. I did a temperature check again at night and I did record a 3 degree temperature change from the inlet to the out let so that tells me the evaparator is working to some degree. I might do a temperature test in the roof right near where the blower is. I think if I focus on at least better insulated ducting and check for any leakages I might be on a winner.
replacement of air handler unit? I HAVE A HEAT PUMP THA IS 10 SEER WITH 2.5 TONS (CARRIER). IM TRYING TO REPLACE MY AIR HANDLER UNIT WITH 13 SEER WITH SAME 2.5 WIH DIFFERENT BRAND. MY QUESTION IS CAN I INSTALL A UNIT THAT S10 SEER TO A 13 SEER? ALSO CAN I INSTALL DIFFERENT BRAND?
Could a lizard short out and burn up a heat pump startup capacitor? Well, I've got the capacitor off the Carrier that was just buzzing earlier and wouldn't start the outside fan or compressor. The only thing suspect was that a lizard was literally dead and shorting between the contacts on the capacitor. Could this just be coincidence or could that lizard have burned up the capacitor or something else? Thanks for any help! Also trying to guess if I damaged the compressor at all from repeatedly trying to start it. However, it seems I wouldn't since if the cap is burned out it just won't start anyway?
Heat pump cuts out randomly, and breaker has to be reset, but breaker is not in the off position? I have a carrier gas pack heating and cooling outside unit. My ac runs just fine but heat cuts out ramdomly. It just started this year. I have no idea what is causing it. Breaker was replaced with electrical upgrade so it is somewhere in the unit. Any quick tips, do not want to get taken to the cleaners by heating and cooling guy.
How do I replace a fuse for air conditioner? I have Carrier Series 38 heat pump system. Inside unit is running, but outside unit is not, so I want to try replacing the fuse (FLNR40). The fuse holder has a handle that you pull out, and along comes two fuses. They are fastened with two clamps that I can't figure out how to unfasten.
I am installing a new heat pump and would like a comparison of various brands. Efficiency? Price? I am replacing a Carrier that has given us problems from the beginning--7 yrs--worth and am not receiving any help from them. I have been quoted on a Goodman, but really am not familiar with the brand. I am also interested in the most yenergy efficient for my home which is all electric. Any advice?
Which Heat Pump Brand is best for my situation - Trane / York / Carrier / American Standard? I need it to be reliable for at least the next 15 yrs, because I plan to stay in my house for at least that long. Does anyone have any personal experience with any of these brands? Are any of these manufacturer's current product lines crap? Are any of them good or better than others? I need to have the heat pump and air handler replaced in my house. The current one is 20yrs old and it is not worth having it repaired vs buying a new replacement. I'm considering these brands as a replacement. Trane York American Standard Carrier One Note -- I'm only looking for opinions of new equipment! Please no posts about how long your old unit has lasted. Just because it lasted that long does not mean that their new stuff will. (I already have a York heat pump that's 20 years old, but I have no idea if their longevity and quality now is a good as it was in 1988.)
what are all the controll wires going to a carrier infinity condensor? what are all the controll wires going to a carrier infinity condensor? straight cool not a heat pump. there are 6 wires A B C D then 2 additional controll wires running to an outdoor air sensor for the inside UI controller. what the hell are A B C D? i dont understand multiple wires to a straight residential A/C
What is the cost of new heat pump system? My old system need replacement. I am just wondering how much would it cost to replace the heat pump, air handlers, and thermostats including the labor cost. I would prefer a name brand products like Carrier, York or Trane. 2 ton unit is what I'm looking for...
A/C-Heat Pump condenser hum? Carrier 38YKC heat pump, when not running, outside condensor makes a loud humming noise, No hum when running. Condensor fan blades turn freely in both direction. getting plenty of cold air. Capacitor bad or is there a transformer, or ? Can I replace or call tech?
Why does the fan of the upstairs apt heating/cooling unit run for about 10 sec then stop, then run again? I live in a condo and the fan for the Carrier heating/cooling unit (it's a heat pump, I believe) for the upstairs condo (the unit is situated just outside my porch) will spin for about 5-10 seconds, shut off for about 5-10 seconds, and then spin for 5-10 seconds, then shut off (and so on and so forth). I have no earthly idea why it does this, and my unit, which is identical, does not have this same issue. This is not entirely continuous, but it tends to do this at night while I try to sleep. Any ideas?
comfortmaker heat pump? Hi - I am thinking of replacing my current 26 year old Heat Pump with a Comformaker 13 SEER unit. What is your experience with this brand and do you know if it is made by one of the big players such as Trane/Lennox/Carrier etc as a budget brand. Thanks.
Home Air conditioning system rip off? I paid for a 14 Seer heat pump/condenser (outside unit) and a 13 Seer variable speed air handler to replace my old 10 Seer units. I am using the same number of KW hrs/day, and I found out the outside unit is only rated at 13 Seer. Carrier says the combination of these two units is equal to a 15 Seer system. Can 2+2=5 in AC?THe contractor also disconnected my hot water recovery system , said it wouldn't work with the new PR410 refrigerant. Carrier just refer me back to the installer if I press for more info.
Wiring/Programming a Honeywell TH8320 Thermostat? I recently purchased a Honeywell TH8320 programmable thermostat to bring a little energy efficiency to my new home. I have a Carrier 25HBA3 Base Series split system heat pump with a unit outside, and one indoors (installed up in the attic space above my garage). I detached the previous thermostat and made note of the wire colors and connections, and followed the instructions in the Honeywell manual to the best of my understanding, though I am not finding success in getting the heater to operate. Here are the connections as per the previous thermostat: W* -- O -- White Wire G -- Green Wire R -- Red Wire C -- Blue Wire Y* -- Yellow Wire *There is a small length (about 1.5") of green wire that seems to be acting as a jumper connecting that goes from the W terminal to the Y terminal. When I try connecting my Honeywell TH8320, I am not able to get the heat to turn on. I did something last night that had heat coming on when I had it set to cool, but I decided to completely disconnect all wires from their terminals and start from scratch, though to no avail. Based on my heat pump, I am assuming that it is a 1H/1C Heat Pump with no auxiliary heat, though perhaps I am mistaken. My connections to the Honeywell terminal are as follows: RC and R are connected by a jumper, with the red wire from the wall connected to the R terminal. C -- Blue Wire Y -- Yellow Wire G -- Green Wire O/B -- White Wire The small length of green wire is connected to both the Y terminal and the O/B terminal (Since for conventional systems, it shows that the O/B terminal is actually the W terminal). I think I am so close to having this correct, and I am seeking a little help to get me to a more energy efficient home. Thank you for any assistance and guidance!
Payne vs. Carrier air conditioner? Our central air/heat pump needs replacing. The repair tech states that Carrier makes Payne (and Bryant) and uses the same parts. He claims we can save several $1000. Anyone have experience with Payne?
What brand of air handler would be recomended? Outside unit is a ten year old Trane xl1200 heat pump. Indoor air handler has bitten the dust. Looking at one for 3.5 ton 13 Max SEER. So far I have check out Goodman, Amana, Trane, and Carrier. Just want to know what others think. Thanks
Heat Pump Leak. Please Help!!!? I live in NC and seem to be having problems with my air source heat pump. About five months ago it stopped working due to the pipe connected to the condenser freezing up. This was due to lack of freon and I had to get it refilled. Obviously I have a leak that I need to have fixed and think I have found the source. Under the house near the air carrier unit there is a puddle which I think is the leaking freon. However, it is not leaking directly from the carrier unit, but from a little box shaped unit that is attached to the carrier unit via tubes and pipes. The top of this unit has a label that says condenser (I thought the condenser was inside the compressor). A white pipe that is connected to the carrier unit runs into the top of the condenser, but is not sealed and fluid is leaking out of the top onto the ground. Obviously I do not know much about this stuff and every time I call a contractor they do not know what little box like unit I am referring to. Does anybody know what this is? If so is this a fixable leak, or am I going to get stuck replacing the entire unit? Any advice would be appreciated.
model # 38QN030330SM? carrier heat pump outside unit model unit serial # 38QN030330SM Inside unit model # 40AQ030300BU
New heat pump, old air handler.....bad? Ok, late last summer I had to have my heat pump/conderser replaced as the 20 year old Carrier unit finally died. My home warranty company covered the replacement but install a Goodman. I have come to find out now that Goodmans are not necessarily the best brand and are not all that efficent when the outside temp gets above 100 (which never happens here in AZ...lol). Anyways, I still have the old evap coil/air handler and I am wondering if that is a problem. During the summer months it is tough to keep the house cool at all. Would replacing the air handler with a matching unit be worth the cash or no?
Is there a fluid which evaporates at room temperature and condenses to a liquid at 200 degree at 10atm? My previous question had melts instead of condenses. I am looking for a carrier (refrigerant) for my dream heat pump with vapour compression system with a COP>!.
I need an new A/C Heat Pump? I need to replace my 14 year old unit (Goodman). Had good luck with it only replaced the coils. I live in Florida (hot and humidity). The ones were considering is (15 seer 3 1/2 ton) Carrier, Lennox Elite Series, Goodman, and Rheem. Some of the models have varible speed and some don't. Were not sure on the varible speed do we need one with it to save on the bills? .Which brand will give me the best service?
