Rheem Heat Pumps Knowledge Base

How long can I expect my Rheem heat pump/air conditioner to last for my home? This is a two-part question: 1) I don't know the first thing about air conditioning units, but a friend of mine told me residential air conditioners only last a maximum of 10-12 years. This seems like a pretty short lifespan for such an expensive piece of equipment. Is he correct? 2) Also, is the heat pump a separate unit from the air conditioner?
how to check the capacitor on a rheem heat pump to tell if it is good or bad? the unit was working fine and now the fan will run but the compressor will not kick on. I have check the contact opening and there is no blockage between the points. I have had "critters" get between the contacts and the compressor would not kick on.
Rheem Heat Pump problem? Recently my Rheem heat pump stopped working. I replaced the fan motor which required me to replace the capacitor with either a 5/370 for 230 volts or 7.5/370 for 208 volts. I replaced it with the 7.5 'cause thats all the guy at the parts store had. Now the fan needs a nudge to start spinning, then works fine untill it kicks off. Did I get the wrong capacitor or is there something else I need to look at? My old fan motor had 3 wires and corresponded to a 3 MF capacitor. The new motor has 5 wires and I was told to just hook up the three like the old one was and coil the other 2 to the side. I replaced the run capacitor with a 7.5/370 and just now replaced the fan/condensor capacitor with a 5/440 (was told the 440 was fine as long as it was greater than the 370). Anyway, it's still doing the same thing and needs that nudge to get going. Time for a new relay switch I guess.
why does our rheem heat pump-outside unit-ice over? heating system works in the home, but when it reaches the set temperature desired, it stops blowing warm air and blows cold air before shutting off.
Rheem heat pump humming (inside & outside).? Have a 9 year old Rheem heat pump. 10 SEER. In the past year it has started humming. HP repair person laughed and said "its a hummer, don't worry about it". But the noise has gotten louder. 2 story house, 1,000 SF on each floor. Unit in basement has humming coming from inside the top of the box - at times. Thin copper pipe coming from HP (in the basement) was humming yesterday but I slightly bent it down about 1/8" so it would no longer rub against the metal casing and that stop that hum. But the outdoor unit hums so loud - you can hear it inside the house - and over the tv's sound. And it does this for long periods of time. Did not use to do this. House may have settle some since the HP was installed, but not major/ noticeable settling. Temp in the Richmond,VA area has been in the 30's during the days. (1) Could the outside humming be the defrost cycle? (2) HP repair company, said the most likely way to fix the problem is to replace the connection from the outside unit to the indoor unit. Which I find questionable. Never had a problem with the 20 year old Rudd which this unit replaced. And Rheen & Rudd is owned by the same company. Have visually inspect the unit outside, the copper pipe to the inside unit, and the inside unit. Cannot find anything lose or with holes. Have lived in this house 30 years. Never had this problem before.
Rheem heat pump compressor will not start? The compressor tries to start repeatedly but will not. I have had it checked out by a service professional and they have replaced thermostatic switches but I know this is not the problem. They said the pressures checked out OK. 2 years ago they installed a hard start kit. That helped for a while but now similar problem again. Is this a bad compressor or capacitor? it is about 10 yrs old; the hard start is 2 yrs old well thanks dvdacmn, it helps. It hurts, but it helps. What I do not understand is the compressor starts fine in cool mode. Could this be an indication that the indoor coil is plugged because the high side of the compressor is having trouble pushing through it?
Why should a 6-year-old Rheem heat pump need the coils cleaned? Has anyone else had this problem? We clean the manufacturer's filter once a month. We do not live in dusty/dirty conditions (paved road, no nearby construction). As for pets, we have one cat and one dog, both with short hair. I am concerned that we are having to have this cleaning done so soon (will cost about $500+). What brought the problem to our attention was wet carpet; the system was leaking into a closet. I am just curious if this is a normal defect or something that is a symptom of a bigger issue. Is there another filter we should be using. The manufacturer's filter does not seem like it would catch much; is black strands that are cris-crossed in a mesh pattern, but does not seem to be a tight enough mesh to catch most dust/particles. Can we use another filter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to do this again in another few years.
Is is possible to unstick a stuck expansion valve on a Rheem rhqa 1315t AC/Heat pump? the unit is 25 years old..we are just trying to make it through one more summer. We have had two compaies look at it. One said not worth replacing becuase there is a small leak also in the evap coils. The other said the valve was not stuck when he looked at it..but might or might not be low on freon..but it was still not cooling.
why do my heat pump not cool properly? rheem heat pump 3.5 ton
heat pump problem? We have two rheem heat pumps installed in 2002. A couple months ago, one of the compressors has to be replaced and we had a specialist replaced it for us. Last week, when we turned on the heat and set the temperature to 70. The heating system won't stop even through the room temperature had reached 75. We had the same person that replaced our compressor to check on the problem, and the solution he gave us was to change the thermostat. We purchased a new thermostat and had it replaced. The next day, our heat pump still won't stop running and we had the same technician check on it again. The solution was still the same, something wrong with the thermostat and we have to buy another one. Can someone tell us what could be causing this? We have installed a new thermostat today (the 2nd thermostate installed this week) and the heating system still won't stop running. The guy open up the heat pump and found out that the compessor has burn out again. We just had the compressor changed two months ago, anyone know what's causing the problem? We have already spend more than $1500 on the repair of our AC/Heating system and it seems the problem haven't been fixed. The repairer is going to reinstall the compressor next week. The guy was going to charge the labor fees for replacing the compressor, but after much argument about this, he is replacing the compressor for free. However, we don't think the main problem has anything to do with the compressor.
Heat pump fills house with foul odor.? Last summer I replaced my Rheem heat pump with an identical size and make. The duct work was not replaced but checked and is in good condition. Since the weather turned cold it fills the house with a foul odor every so often. When it happens thick steam rises from the unit outside the window. The service man says that the unit is going through the defrost cycle. Why does the new unit do this and the old one did not? Any ideas? Thanks.
Can you assist in my adding a breaker to my Rheem A/C Heat Pump writing box? Recently, I had a biannual cleaning of my Rheem A/C Heatpump. The guy who came out expressed surprise at the wiring, though he could not make the changes needed without exorbitant charges, he did tell me what needed to be done. Unfortunately, I was not at home and when I did get home, the instructions he gave me don't seem exactly right. Here is a photo of the current wiring. The box sits right above the A/C. http://home.comcast.net/~synchronicity/photos/rheem.jpg He explained that there should really be two breakers and that the installers sort of 'cut corners' in installing this, and placing in the second breaker is better. He said that the two white wires in the center needed to have a breaker between them. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how. If I were to put in a breaker, the breaker is plugged into the power. It would seem to be to be incorrect, then, to place BOTH of those white wires onto the breaker. I'd appreciate some input on this. Professionals please.
I have only 146" of free area where the filter sits, for my Rheem Classic 3 ton heat pump. OK? An a/c serviceman came out last week and cut into the return duct next to the furnace and installed shelf to hold my pleated filter. I had been using larger hogshair ones. The inside space for air to pass through is only 17 1/4 x 8 1/2" at this spot where the shelf is. This gives me only 146 sq. inches of free airspace at this spot. The rest of the duct is 14" x 22". It would seem that this has restricted my airflow. How much free area do I need. It seems to be cooling ok but I am worried. Thanks for any answers. Peggy Thank you for your answers. This smaller space for the air to go thru has actually resulted in more air coming thru the vents and the house being cooler. I guess it is kinda like putting your finger over part of a garden hose as the water is coming out, and the water comes out harder and faster. What is the downside of this as far as damage to the unit? The Arm & Hammer pleated filter I have there now is a Merv 8. It is a 12 x 20 - however part of it is overlapping the edges of the metal shelving - so only 17 1/4 x 8 1/2 is over the open area. Am I better to put the hogshair filter back in. Is this less restrictive - until I can get the A/C tech back out here to enlarge the opening.
Is my Honeywell rth3100c thermostat wiring hooked up correctly? The wires on the thermostat are hooked up as such. Six wires (white) to Aux jumpered to E (yellow) to Y (green) to G (red) to R (blue) to B (brown) to C O and L are left unwired Everything works good but the outside electric heat pump (RHEEM) runs constantly and does not shut down when the thermostat is in the off position and also when there is no air blowing inside.
What is a better HVAC unit Rheem or Trane? I have a chove betweem installing a Rheem or a Trane HVAC unit for my home. 3.5 ton heat pump. What is the better choice ?- price is approx. the same
I need an new A/C Heat Pump? I need to replace my 14 year old unit (Goodman). Had good luck with it only replaced the coils. I live in Florida (hot and humidity). The ones were considering is (15 seer 3 1/2 ton) Carrier, Lennox Elite Series, Goodman, and Rheem. Some of the models have varible speed and some don't. Were not sure on the varible speed do we need one with it to save on the bills? .Which brand will give me the best service?
When I turn on my central heat, it blows cold air and does not heat up. I think it is a heat pump system. Help? On occasion, it seems to work when I play around with the thermostat. What do you think is wrong? I have been living in this condo for 2 years and it has only recently had this issue. The building was built in the 80's, so I think the heating system may be old (although it still works every now and then). A repairman that was in the neighborhood fixing someone else's heater mentioned that it may be stuck in defrost mode, although he would have to look at it to verify. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've replaced the two fuses near the compressor (I think this is what the fan is called). The furnace is Rheem brand, I believe, and the compressor (is this the heat pump?) says York on it. If anyone knows a good repairman in the San Ramon, California area, please let me know. Thanks so much!
What is the best brand to buy for replacing an electric heat pump condensor and air handler? Back in December, my heater stopped working. It continually blowed cold air whenever I turned on the heat. Sometimes, if I turn the circuit breaker off for the furnace, it will work again. I had two different people look at the heat pump and air handler. One said that there is a restriction in the heat pump and that it would be best to replace both the heat pump condenser AND the air handler. I'm not sure where the problem is - whether it's with the condensor or the air handler. The air handler seems to work since it's blowing cold air. The condensor does not always come on (it does sometimes when I turn the circuit breaker on and off). I've replaced the thermostat and it still does not work. Could it be something with the circuit breaker? Another tech suggested that the heat strip in the air handler is bad. All the people I have called seem to contradict each other, but all recommend replacing both the heat pump condensor and air handler. What brand is best? One guy is pushing Rheem. The other is pushing Day & Night. Another is pushing Frigidaire or Friedrich (not sure which he said). I've looked online and cannot find any ratings on heat pump condensors or air handlers. I'm confused because everyone is saying something different and saying their brand is better. Please help! It is freeeezing in my house. I'm not sure if it really is the right thing to replace both units or if this is something that can be fixed.
Who makes a good residential 4 ton 15,16, seer a/c unit, rheem ? carrier? american standard? Any good web sites that compare reliablity? consumer reports does not. Living in florida with split sytem heat pump.Thanks...
How Does Central Air work? My unit works great but it leaks water all over the basement and I'd like to fix it. This is a Rheem Central Air/Heat unit. It looks like there is a system/pump to drain the water but I'm not sure. The bottom of the unit has some rust and spaces where water leaks. Will sealing that help? Is that the real problem? Thanks a lot!!!
AC problems, HELP !!? central heat pump, old (probably '80's) Rheem, only runs when HOLDING reset button in, stops when released. This also disables inside portion of unit (no blower). Also, can I bypass the reset botton?
Is this a fair quote for FL central air conditioning? My handler and condensor are both shot. The company (reputable and rated favorably with the BBB) provided me with two quotes. Both are for a 15 SEER, 2.5 heat pump system. They would reconnect duct work, weatherproof the electrical disconnect, provide a new thermastat, etc. The quote is for both the handler and condensor as well as installation. The first system is a Lennox Elite and the second is a Rheem Classic. They price at $6,500 and $5,700, respectively. Is this fair? Which is a better system as far as longetivity, "weatherproofing," efficiency, etc.? I have to make a decision pretty quickly.
