5 Steps to Lower Heating Costs this Winter

The average U.S. homeowner saw their household heating costs increase $585 over the October 2007-March 2008 season, according to the Energy Information Administration. This winter, a homeowner can expect that number to increase even more.

Consider a new furnace to lower heating costs.

Although spending $5,000 for a new gas furnace seems pricey, new equipment could save $1,000 to $2,000 on energy costs per year. If a new heating system is not an option, consumers can make home improvements and modifications to their current heating system and save 8% to 15% over the course of a year on heating costs. Turning down thermostats and insulating windows are also easy solutions.

Five suggestions to holding down heating costs.

1. Participate in a budget plan with your utility company - This will help stabilize your monthly payments. You will spend the same per year, but won't get socked with a big heating bill in the dead of winter.

2. Get a home energy audit - Utility companies will oftentimes provide a home energy audit for free. Do this before winter to make sure your furnace and appliances are running as efficiently as possible.

3. Winterize your home -  Caulking and weather stripping doors and windows will seal out cold air and help save on heating costs. Installing more and better insulation in your house will save energy costs as well as wrapping the hot water heater with insulation.

4. Install a programmable thermostat - This little gadget will automatically lower temperature settings, especially when you're asleep or not at home.

5. Invest in a high efficiency gas furnace - It might cost $5,000 or $6,000, but with the money you'll save on heating costs due to increased efficiency, a new gas furnace will pay for itself in three years.
